Episode XXXIX – A.C.
Posted by The Bellman on July 20, 2010
The Hive has nothing much to say about Pike. It provides his birth records, his private employment records (he’s an analyst of some kind at Haight Western) and his “Profile” — his ratings by various people he’s interacted with electronically and physically in the Mark. He’s an ordinary guy, absurdly rich by Undercity standards, upper middle class otherwise. According to his Profile and employment reviews, he’s average at his job and not in any danger either of losing it or being promoted. He has no criminal record, though he likes to gamble. People see him as a perennial striver — always on the make but not really good enough to make it. As such his trust ratings are fine for commercial transactions, but not stellar. In short, he’s an average, if slightly shady, banker.
The Hive also has nothing much (useful) to say about August. It provides his various arrest records and the private law-enforcement files on him. He’s a thug. It also provides the same rumors A.C. has already heard. It doesn’t have anything more on him. It’s not a clearance level issue, there just aren’t any good sources. The Hive notes that it could attempt to secure information from certain restricted sources that it has not yet prioritized, but that to do so it would require something in return. A.C.’s sense is that The Hive is talking about hacking the Inns, and that doing so would be costly.
LB: The thing about the Thing, is that it’s not something you guys made. Well, it is. I mean, someone made it — carved it into that shape. But that’s not what matters. It’s the stuff. LB pauses. A.C.’s connection to him flickers for a moment, as if he were away for just a second. Then he’s back.
Here’s the thing. We were here first. We were here long before you. A really, really long time before you. When you came here, you didn’t settle down next to us, you wiped the world clean first. You can’t understand what it means. No one can. Close as we are, Doc, it’s not even real for me and it can’t be real for you. It was a million times worse than the worst thing ever. I don’t even understand it. I don’t understand what was left behind when nothing was left behind — but that’s that. Anyway some of what you did was just make these big, hot fires. And some of what came out of those fires was, like, melted dirt or sand or rock or something. And some of that rock cooled down into this black glass with . . . stuff in it. And the head is a chunk of that. And what it has in it has power. Old, old power. It’s some of the last stuff left from before you wiped us off the face of our own planet. It doesn’t do anything in your world — or maybe it does. It’s hard to tell because it’s so active in mine. People with a close connection to my world are going to be drawn to it because of what’s inside it. Whether they know it or not. What they do with that power depends on who they are and how they work.

A.C. responds to Kaz’s message: Understood. Saw a surveillance tape of the event for sale at a recent auction, so stuff is certainly out there. If you are pursuing anything in this line, or if you know anyone who might compromise my security, let me know.
To LB: Are any entities in your world, or entities in mine, doing anything with the item right now? By the way, what sorts of things could you do with it, personally?
The Bellman said
Right now the Item isn’t doing anything. It’s sitting in the mansion as far as I can tell. I don’t want to go in there too deep so I can’t see it, but I don’t think it’s active anywhere. I don’t know what I would do with it. I could use it as a bridge to do things in your world if I wanted to, you know — I could move power into your world across it. But mostly I would want to see if we could . . . I don’t know if I can tell you this. We’re friends. I like you, Doc; you’re a good guy. But we lost everything. I guess we’d try to use it to rebuild.
A.C. said
Wait a sec… If this stuff would allow you to rebuild, why hasn’t anyone from your world tried it already? There’s got to be moreof it around, and there are powerful folks in your world who could get to it no matter how securely the people in our world tried to hide it. So why hasn’t the rebuilding process already started? I don’t understand.

Link to A.C.: The HIVE is offering a 750k reward for the data if it can be obtained before widely distributed. I just heard about it and am working on it solo right now. I could use your expertise and would split the reward with you, if you want to partner on it. HIVE is paying expenses. In any case, I could use any details you’ve got. Where did you see it for sale? Do you know who bought it?
I don’t have any confirmed dangers, but the guy that showed me the pics is of course heavily suspect. His name is Rice, Kaz includes info on him. I suspect that Rice is just a reliable Johnson as he appears, he says he has a buyer lined up for the info. His employer/buyer could be a threat, but I’ve got nothing on that. Rice is the competition right now, I don’t know if he can be bought or duped into helping us.
FYI, this is all news to me as of an hour ago.

To Kaz:
Item was at a secret auction held every few months. No idea who bought it. Went for $3,500 which is low if it were genuine, so I doubt it was. But it hints that genuine may be available somewhere. Should I track down more leads?
To HIVE:
Pleas confirm that you are offering 750K for a data reel concerning the events at Bugtown, if it can be brought to you before being otherwise distributed. Any details on this offer?
Kazuo said
Reply from Kaz, Rice said he got the pictures from a “broker”, dunno if that could mean auction. Yes, checkout leads. If you are into the job, the HIVE offered another reward option: 100k en and “increased access to the HIVE”. The HIVE would then do some small ‘net tasks, like fake a security feed or open an electronic door. That would be my choice, but I would go for either if we can find the stuff.
The Bellman said
HIVE: Confirmed. Upon delivery of the data source containing the video of the Bugtown events, The Hive will provide one level of increased access to all participants of the delivery team plus a cash bonus of e100,000 plus expenses to be shared among all participants in the event the source information is delivered intact and has not been substantially disseminated. If the participants prefer to take monetary compensation only in lieu of improved HIVE access, the payment amount will be increased to e750,000. This is the Learning of the Hive.

LB ((re: number 3)): I don’t know the first thing about how this kind if thing would work, Doc, but what makes you think we haven’t started?
A.C. said
(A.C. will continue with LB offline. For now he rests until his meet with the Twinmoon folks.)
The Bellman said
Darcy Links A.C.: I have a meet set up for you in Brigsard at the Ko-Ko Bubble tea house at 2:30. The contact calls himself Otis — he’s a cutout for Twinmoon, but he’s a close as I could get and he should have some answers. He’s their version of customer relations. Do you want me there?
A.C. said
A.C. tells Darcy that he’d be happy to have her, and that she should chime in at the meet with anything she thinks would generate more info. Then he calls Swann to book the car, and heads for the tea house, arriving about half an hour early.
Assume LB checks out the clientele, and Otis in particular.
The Bellman said
A.C. and Darcy arrive and set up. LB checks out the crowd and finds no one of interest. Otis arrives on time, an ordinary looking guy dressed in fashionable, but not ostentatious street clothes. He looks around and, seeing Darcy, waves. He gets himself a neon-green bubble tea, then walks over and sits down. LB sees nothing special about Otis either.
Hi. Otis. Let me start by saying how sorry we are for the trouble, and if there’s anything we can reasonably do to help we’d like to do it. Now. What can I do for you today?
A.C. said
A.C. waits for Darcy to open, at least with an introduction, since he’s a stranger to Otis. If she does not, he lets Otis know that he will be ” working with the buyers on this, in hopes of finding a successful resolution. Of course we don’t want to step on anyone’s toes… ”
In this context, he starts by asking whether Twinmooon will be pursuing any action against the fraudulent seller. If so, what sorts? If not, what’s Twinmoon’s take on the whole thing…
LB concentrates on nudging Otis toward revealing more than he might otherwise, but not so much that he will feel used the morning after, or that it will cost A.C. karma. Just “grease” Otis a bit, as if he’d had a drink or two and Darcy was looking beautiful… So the envelope of professional discretion was not broken, but perhaps pushed…
A.C. will keep the conversation going. He’s fishing. If this area seems panned out, let me know and I’ll start talking about something else.
Two “off-topic” points lurk in A.C.’s mind: Twinmoon’s physical location and tech resources, and the datareel regarding the Bugtown operation they sold. If A.C. can glean anything on these two topics without giving away his interest, he does so.
The Bellman said
Darcy introduces herself to Otis as the bidder — apparently they have never met — and introduces A.C. as a colleague who is helping her resolve issues arising out of the auction. Otis seems to understand and answers A.C.’s questions. LB doesn’t need to push much.
Well, I’ll tell you, we have various ways of dealing with fraudulent sellers. There are penalties — we may charge them money or bar them from future sales or the like. We’re always going to make the buyer whole, of course, which I believe has already happened. As you know we have no obligations at all under the standard agreement, but we want to do the right thing, so I’m pleased to be able to offer a 5% settlement or we’ll agree to waive our commission on your next transaction. Whichever you like.
In this case, it’s a little strange. You know there were a number of irregularities. We bent the rules for a powerful and prestigious seller, and it won’t happen again — we learned our lesson. As it turns out, though, our usual confidentiality doesn’t really apply here, because both parties agreed to a meet. And now the seller — or anyway the owner — wants to meet with you to talk about what happened. If you’re interested I could set that up. Say the word.
Efforts to move the conversation toward details about Twinmoon — location, ownership, assets, management etc. — fail utterly. LB informs you that it would take a HUGE shove to get the guy to even start to talk about that; he has strong mental blocks preventing it. Getting him around to talking about the “black box” will be much easier. The only question is whether you want to do that around Darcy or not.
A.C. said
A.C. lets Darcy decide whether to take the 5% or the free commission. He has no claim either way. If Darcy looks his way for guidance, he’ll just let her know that if she is selling an item worth 375K or more, the commission is a good deal; if not, she should take the 5%. (Assuming a 6% standard commission. If Twinmoon’s is higher or lower, A.C. does the math.)
A.C. is happy to let Otis set up a meeting with the owner.
A.C. lets it slip that he was at the last auction and was bemused to see the black box go up for sale. Just as a freebie, if your buyers want to know more about that affair in the desert, I am someone they might want to talk to…
From there he lets Otis expand the conversation as much as LB can coax him to, without hitting any blocks.
If anyone wants to know more, have them get in touch. Here’s my Link ID. And if they doubt my bona fides, tell them I used the word “Bugtown.”
The Bellman said
I’m not really sure why anyone bought that. It was a fairly obvious fake. The real one is out there, I’m sure, but there are also a bunch of fakes and the serious bidders who came to look at the box in the pre-show sussed it out pretty quick. . . He seems to stop and consider whether he should go on, then shrugs. There are a bunch of images floating around from the data source as well, though I haven’t seen any. As I understand it was a five or six person team and there are eight or ten different images out there supposedly from the source showing different people supposedly from the team. The stories are a mess and no one really knows what’s real and what’s not. That kind of disinformation points to one of a few sources. If you were interested, we could maybe look into it for you . . . I don’t know . . . Certainly if I get inquiries I’ll send them your way.
A.C. said
Please do. I’m more than interested. And let me know if your information costs you anything. I’ll try to reimburse you if I can. Any inquiries I’ll gladly receive.
And as soon as the owner of the war ornament wants to meet, we’re happy to oblige
The Bellman said
Otis nods. Darcy thanks him and tells him she’ll get back to him on what she wants to take for her trouble. Once you’ve all finished up, Otis leaves. Later that morning, he Links you that Colin Ehrwood would like to meet you at his office. 2:00 this afternoon will work, if that is convenient.
A.C. said
A.C. informs Darcy and Swann, and prepares for the meet.
The Bellman said
((All set. Anything else before the meet, or do you head over the HW?))
A.C. said
If Darcy wants to stick around for lunch, A.C. is happy to do so. At some point he tries an opening, to wit:
Listen: do you want to talk at all about how you and I come to know what kind of thing that ornament is? Or, you know, who you are and who I are, and how we got to where we are now? Do you want to share, or are we going to be mystery man and mystery woman for a while?
The Bellman said
Darcy and A.C. sit and eat and chat. Does A.C. want to use any power or any of L.B.’s power to attempt to nudge Darcy into talking about this stuff?
A.C. said
No. A.C. will stick with his own persuasion skills (which are not inconsiderable) for now. He thinks there’s an off chance that Darcy could figure out if she were being manipulated.
The offer to trade is real though. He figures that’s his bait. I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours.
The Bellman said
((Sorry for the delay, been dealing with a few things. Happy Birthday, A.C.! Gummo, in case it’s not clear, is out. He thanks you all for the fun.))
Darcy chats easily with A.C. As he turns the conversation around to powers, she becomes wary, but A.C. puts her at her ease. After a while, she seems to come around to A.C.’s deal.
Alright, well, I’d like to hear what you know, that’s for sure, because I don’t know much. I have feelings about situations and objects, and it usually turns out that when I have feelings like that, other people are interested as well. So over time I’ve come to understand that there’s something more to the world than what we can see — psychic emanations or auras or whatever you want to call it — and that I’m sensitive to them. I can tell when an object has a strong emotional attachment for someone, or when it has some kind of “power”. And even if I don’t know what that power is, I’ve learned that there are people who do know what that power is and they’ll pay for those objects. It’s an odd feeling, but it’s not like I’m normal, anyway. Sometimes I can tell what’s going to happen a few seconds before it happens, and I tend to have very good intuition about how things are going to play out. Especially in a fight, I pretty much know what the other guy’s next move is going to be and I can always tell if someone is following me or about to try something. Obviously there’s the way I look. I’m not . . . like other people. So. Whatever.
She takes a deep breath and narrows her eyes. She seems to consider A.C. for a moment.
I don’t know where it all comes from. I. . . I don’t really know much about, um, my parents or anything. So. So I can’t really help there. I’m pretty much what I am. I don’t . . . She pauses again, fingering her wrist in an odd twitch of nervousness that A.C. hasn’t seen from her before. I don’t have a lot of history.
A.C. said
(( As discussed offline, A.C. tells his origin story without names. There is enough there to tell Darcy he has had shine, if she is familiar with it. ))
It’s good to know nobody is following us at least. What does your intuition tell you about what happened last night?
If Darcy wants to follow up on A.C.’s origin, just continue the conversation.
